Final exams at the BME

We had the great honour to participate again in the examinations held at the BME – MSc in Construction Information Technology Engineering – as a member of the final examination committee.

The program is intended as an interdisciplinary transition between the engineering and knowledge in software development, so that the students arrive not only with a background in civil engineers, but a large number of the students also have degrees in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architecture, software development. The diversity of the students’ knowledge is the main challenge in teaching: students studying computing need to be equipped with engineering knowledge, engineers with IT knowledge.

This is something we try to help with during the training.

Thanks to the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Zsolt Oláh was invited to be an external committee member for the MSc in Construction Information Technology Engineering to review the students' thesis and attend their final exams.

The course itself started for the first time in spring 2022, and so far, we have participated as a committee member in all the examinations, in many cases supporting to the student as external consultants or opponents.

In November, Tamás Déri gave a 2-hour lecture to the students, explaining why, what, and how to develop. He presented his lecture through case studies, which were also useful for the students to brainstorm on topics for assignments or a potential thesis.

During the presentations held at the state exam, a wide variety of topics were presented by the students. There was

  • BMS PLC automation,
  • automatic generation of floor plans from point clouds,
  • digital twin, digital shadow and facility management
  • traffic optimization and simulation with IoT tools.

Most of the students are from abroad, coming from all over the world, this time from the Middle East, China, but last year there were also students from Chile and Tanzania.

These occasions are very rewarding for us, a very good opportunity to be informed about research directions and to gain insights into the approach of other disciplines (e.g. traffic optimization), but most importantly, the students’ knowledge is complemented with practical knowledge and criticism, thus shaping the engineers of the future.

Our task in this project was to prepare the detailed design documentation for the expansion of a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. A major technical challenge during the design phase was that the development area is located in the floodplain of the Gyöngyös stream.
