Interurban Public Transport Hub for Békéscsaba – Design Competition

At the heart of our concept is the creation of a new “gateway to the city“—a place that functions not only as a transport hub but also as a vibrant public space. We believe that successful public spaces do more than simply serve the people who use them; they strengthen local identity, foster a sense of belonging, and create opportunities for community interaction.

The elongated site has been organised into functional zones, allowing users of different modes of transport—including buses, rail, bicycles, and private vehicles—to move safely and efficiently with minimal conflict. At the centre of the scheme, an integrated transport system supports fast and seamless transfers between modes.

The southern section has been designed as an active recreational park featuring two lakes, walking paths, and pavilions that provide opportunities for relaxation while enhancing the quality of urban life. Educational trail elements integrated along the promenade introduce visitors to the natural and cultural heritage of Békéscsaba.

The northern zone builds upon the city’s strong cycling culture. Above a high-capacity bicycle storage facility, we envisioned gently sloping landscaped mounds as a distinctive landscape architectural gesture, creating meeting places, community spaces, and a new urban experience. By repurposing the existing warehouse building, we introduced a cyclist café, workshop space, and bicycle service centre, reinforcing the culture of sustainable mobility.

We believe that the transport hubs of the future should be more than infrastructure—they should become catalysts for urban life. They are places where mobility, social interaction, recreation, and community experiences come together and reinforce one another. Great public spaces create connections. They strengthen local identity. They build communities. They make everyday life more enjoyable and more liveable.
